The Wire 152 - October 1996 (Paul Stump)
 Tasty tester tastefully packaged and beautifully recorded by sundry alumni of the above distributors (D.O.R Infinity). Noise as it should be - interesting. :zoviet*france:'s involvement might indicate just how ell-honed sensibilities are right across this raft of recordings; in fact:z*f: crop up twice here, which may lead one to suspect that musicians of the quality found here are thin on the ground. I use the word 'musician' advisedly, but the sheer richness and resourcefulness of the soundscaping on Earth is often poetic in its scope. Funkturm's "Memento", with its lonely foghorns and parade-ground snares and apparent layering of two soundstages (one pristine and digital, the other ancient and analogue) over one another is a delight. :zoviet*france:'s labyrinthine percussion samples that snake here there and everywhere without any apparent goal are also unmissable, and for banal kiddie Minimalism at its most grotesquely inspired, Telematic Nomads can take on all comers.

PHOSPHOR December 1996 (Paul Bijlsma)
The English label D.O.R. Infinity released the first volume in the elements series called 'Water' a few years ago. It is an excellent compilation, that finally has a successor in 'Earth'. The eleven exclusive tracks from ten artists featured on volume two together make up for one of the best and most varied compilations ever.
Fork's track 'Quarantine' is composed of so many different parts that it is almost a compilation on it's own. Both captains Stephan Lock and Richard Gallon go from one atmosphere to the opposite without ever losing track of the overall idea. Auntie Horror Film, featuring Kath Posner on violin have a more tribal rhythmic approach with a catchy attitude that makes you wanna dance on their world music. Doppler 20:20 puts you in a floating ambient-space mood, while Rautam drags you a little further in the deep hole called ambient-industrial, before their techno side takes over.
If you're not schizophrenic enough, Funkturm will make you go more crazy by something that falls between techno and industrial. And Zoviet France try to improve this by the strangest rhythms you have ever heard. Telematic Nomads hypnotise the listener with the ticking of a clock, fine-tuned percussion and a refined ambient layer. While Operation Mind Control dip percussion in an oriental sausage. Vulse bring you into another electronic sub-space and Apollon deliver some of the most exquisite industrial ambient.
This certainly is a wonderful compilation.

It's compilation central this month, I'm afraid. All of them excellent and this one particularly so. As a selection of top-flight ambience Earth is amongst the best. Featuring Zoviet France, Fork Auntie Horror Film, Doppler 20:20, Rautam, Funkturm, Telematic Nomads, Operation Mind Control, Vulse, Apollon. The album grabs you within the first few seconds and proceeds to keep you hypnotised until it's last closing pulses. This is volume two of a DOR series called elements. We would like to acquire volume one as Earth is amongst some of the finest atmospheric, most minimal tripped-out head music we have been fortunate enough to hear. We look forward to number three of this beautiful selection.

Option 72 Jan/Feb 1997 (Lang Thompson)
Yet another compilation of sound constructions, ambient collages and what have you, though one conventional enough to put its strongest piece first. That's "Quarantine" by Fork, which makes a roller coaster of deep surges, metallic clatter and grim rumbles. These amorphous styles can result in an awful lot of dull music, but this album has only a couple of skippable tracks. An old hand at this like Zoviet France (easily the best known name here) gets by with focused attention on texture, but many of the other musicians seem to come from a techno background, which is probably not the best place to learn close listening. What they've brought instead is a willingness to meet the listener half-way with a bit of entertainment. So there's goofy, low-intensity dance beats, fragments of of German vocals, sitars, electronic dings and other leftovers used with humour. The result is that rare thing: a compilation that you might want to hear more than once.

'Earth' is, na 'Water' deel twee in de reeks 'The elements series'. Het idee achter de (midprice) compilaties is het introduceren van bands die dorr de Engelse mail-order D.O.R. Infinity gedistributeerd worden. En introductie hebben de meeste van die bands nodig: ooit gehoord van Fork, Doppler 20:20. Rautam, Funkturm, Telematic Nomads, Vulse en Apollon ? Enkel Zoviet France (met 2 onuitgegeven tracks uit '85), Operation Mind Control en Auntie Horror Film (= Hamid Mantu van Transglobal Underground) zijn met war goede wil 'bekenden'. Bekend of niet, 'Earth' biedt een verzameling experimentele muziek aan waarin geen plaats is voor zwakke momenten. Meer nog dan op 'Water' vind je op 'Earth' een veelvoud aan stijlen: industrieel (Operation Mind Control), ambient (Telematic Nomads, Apollon, Doppler 20:20), dansgericht (het oosterse 'Ziggurat' van Auntie Horror Film, het sublieme 'Snowstorm' van Rautam) of gewoon weird (vulse en of course Zoviet France). Kwaliteit is daarbij het handelsmerk. De nieuwsgierigheid naar de binnenkort te verschijnen fullengthcd's van deze groepen is alleszins gewekt en vooral Rautam en Funkturm moeten gevolgd worden.

Nach Wasser nun Erde & für pay no more than 20 DM eine absolut empfehlenswerte Möglichkeit, die interessantesten Projekte & Label des D.O.R. Vertriebs aus London kennen & schätzenzulernen. Als da wären: Fork mit dark industrail ambient, verstörende Geräusche, also ab in den Tunnel, der plötzlich zu einer mindtorturechamber wird & dann wird ein Trommelbeat-Track daraus & dieser Scoretrack zeigt exemplarisch, wohin die Reise mit den meisten Tracks geht: Etho-Industrial-Ambient. Auntie Horror Film setzen dann auch erstmal auf Tribalethnic-Percussion plus orientalischem Saiteninstrument drüber, während Doppler 20:20 ihre Ambientexkursion mit weird electronic soundrythms überlegen - sehr gut. Rautams 'Snowstorm' ist ein Oberknaller: Original deutsche Pornofilmsamples durch den Delay-FX-Wolf gedreht in einem Stör-Ambient Track. Wahnsinn! Dann kommt plötzlich nach der Loop-Drumkit-Beat! & warm Organlines! Teufel auch wie geill Funkturm machen dito Industrial Ambient, bedrohlich. zugleich groovy. Verstörende Sounds, die nur deine mutierten Freunde sein wollen (Man kennt das aus alten DC-Comics: Das schleimtriefende Monster steht vor Dir &sagt: Ich will doch nur dein Freund sein!). Verstört-Verzerrier Trbal. Earth! Zoviet France ebenfalls mit darkem Ethno, strange strings plus Beat. Telematic Nomads lassen alle möglichen & unmöglichen Ethnoinstrumente in ihre tracks einfliessen, vernetzen sich danach via WorldWideWeb mit Geistes & Geräuschverwandten & speisen die dabei entstehenden Sounds des Internet gleich in ihre Tracks ein. Operation Mind Control stellen einen nihilistischen MuezzinRoboter mitten auf den Bazar & umkloppen seine senseless chants mit noise. Vulse setzen ein mitteleuropäisches Streichquartett unter unbekannte Drogen & damit in tiefste Verwirrung, der sie durch ratloses Spielen in einer orientalischen Gruft beizukommen versuchen - wie ein Kind, das im dunklen Wald tierische Angst hat & völlig schrög weitersingt. Apollons 'The Slug' zu beschreiben ist mir dann aber doch zu hart: Fängt ambientösend an, im Hintergrund schnarrt ein Tier oder eine Existenz, von der Du bislang nie zu träumen gewagt hast & jetzt versuchst Du alles zu tun, um sie bloss nicht aufzuwecken ... dochplötzlich fangen Erruptionen an ... pyschedlischstes & most mindbendingtrack seit langem. Zoviet France lassen dann zum geten Ende noch mal die Schleifmühle rotieren.
Die CD ist ein phantastischer Mix aus experimentellen Etho/Tribal-Tracks - vergesst heur mal alle Ethno/Weltmusik-Kitschassoziationen - & Ethno-Industrial-Ambient, aber nicht ausladend, eber kompakt. Geräusche, einfangen zwischen Tracks & Scores. Halbwild, Halbkontrolliert. Und halbkontrolliert ist nicht kontrolliert. Also begibst Du dich in unknown, unsure, unsafe territory. Das Ergebnis ist ein Sound, der es noch schafft, Dir Schauer auf dem Nockem zu erzeugen, der sowohl deserted industrial areas spüren lässt als auch eine bedrohliche Würste in monochromen Farben im polyrythmischen Weschel. Würsten sind bekanntlich nur Metaphern und jede reale Geographie hat ihre existenzielle Entsprechung. Bei weiterf¨hrenden Fragen richter Sie sich bitte an den Seelenklempner ihres Vertrauens. Als ab das Leben nur aus 0 & 1 bestehen würde! Wir befinden uns erst am Anfang der Transformation.
